Commercial DNA tests are giving researchers a false sense of security about family history, a leading genetics expert has warned.
Scientist and author Professor Turi King, who led the 2012 investigation that used DNA testing to identify the remains of King Richard III, appeared with Neil Fraser of probate research firm Fraser & Fraser at an event at the London Archives on 2 July.
Professor King said: “One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing a DNA test will answer every question about their family history.
“It won't. DNA is incredibly powerful, but it's one piece of evidence and it always needs to be considered alongside documentary research and the family tree before anyone can draw firm conclusions.”
She said that the same people have received different DNA test results from different companies, because the companies compare DNA samples against different databases.
Professor King and Neil Fraser highlighted the family secrets people are discovering as a result of DNA testing, including unexpected parentage, previously unknown relatives and donor conception.
Neil Fraser said: "People often think they're buying a family tree when they buy one of these kits. They aren't. What they're actually getting is one piece of evidence that might answer one question but raise several others.”
Professor King also encouraged people to use genetic testing on the NHS, rather than commercial tests, to understand their inherited health risks.
