It's the turn of chart-topping pop singer Will Young to trace his family history on Who Do You Think You Are? Here's five things you might not know about the star...

1. Musical roots

Will’s love of music began early. He was head chorister at Horris Hill Preparatory School and learned to play piano at the age of nine.

2. TV success

In 2002, aged 23, Will won the first series of the ITV talent show Pop Idol. His double A-sided debut single 'Anything Is Possible' / 'Evergreen' was released two weeks after the show's finale and became the fastest-selling debut single in the UK.

3. Stage star

In 2013, Will starred in a critically acclaimed West End revival of Cabaret, playing the Emcee – a role that earned him an Olivier Award nomination.

4. Writing and advocating

Since coming out as gay in 2002 (though he’s said he’s not fond of the term ‘coming out’), Will has been a vocal LGBTQ+ rights advocate. In 2020 he published To Be a Gay Man, a deeply personal book exploring the topic of gay shame and the impact it had on his life since an early age.

5. Tragic loss

In 2020 Will's twin brother Rupert Young tragically died by suicide. In 2022 he presented the acclaimed Channel 4 documentary Will Young: Losing My Twin about his brother's death.
