Detectorists and Mr Bates vs The Post Office actor Toby Jones investigated his family history on a recent episode of Who Do You Think You Are?
In the episode, Toby discovered that his 2x great grandfather John Jones, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, fought in the British army in India, putting down the 1857 Indian Mutiny.
In this clip, Toby visits the Kashmiri Gate in Delhi, where John’s regiment would have entered the city in the thick of the fighting.
He says: “It’s extraordinary to imagine my great great grandfather coming through that gate to the city here, and perhaps even harder to contemplate the impact of that terrible conflict on him as he made the journey back to Stoke. I’m trying to think of who on earth he would have been at that stage in his life, having experienced all that.”
