Ruth Madeley is a British actor, best known for her roles in Years and Years and Doctor Who. She was born in Manchester on 4 August 1987 and is 38 years old.

Six weeks before she was born, Ruth was diagnosed with spina bifida, a condition where a baby has an incomplete closing of the spine during the early development of pregnancy. 

Ruth wrote and starred in the TV movie Scrims and had roles in TV shows such as Fresh Meat, The Level, Outnumbered, and Cold Feet.

She has been a contestant on TV shows such as Would I Lie to You?, Celebrity Mastermind, Celebrity Best Home Cook, and Celebrity Catchphrase. 

She has been with her partner Joe Lawrence since 2012, and they married in 2024.

She will play real-life disability rights activist Judith Heumann in the forthcoming film Being Heumann.

1. Young activist

When Ruth was 13 years old, she visited Cherie Blair at 10 Downing Street to discuss funding and awareness for Whizz Kidz. Whizz Kidz is a charity she has worked closely with her whole life that supports young wheelchair users. She received a custom wheelchair from the charity when she was 5 years old. 

2. Youth award winner

Also at 13, she was awarded the Princess Diana Memorial Award for young people. The honour is an international award that honours young people who work to improve the lives of others.  

3. Writing talent

Ruth studied English and creative writing at Edge Hill University and graduated with a first-class degree.  

4. Advocate for change

Ruth won Stylist’s magazine’s Change Maker of the Year Award in 2022 at their Remarkable Women Awards.

5. Acting abilities

She received a BAFTA nomination in 2016 for Best Actress in the show Don’t Take My Baby. The show won the award for best drama that same year.
