The dataset was released today by The Office for National Statistics where you can compare records going back to 1996.
Going back 100 years, historic newspapers held on genealogy website Findmypast show that the Daily Mirror looked at birth announcements to rank the popularity of names in 1925. The top five baby names for girls in 1925 were: Joan, Mary, Elsie, Dorothy and Annie and for boys they were: John, William, George, Thomas and Frank. Of those, both Elsie and George remain in the top ten with Elsie sitting in exactly the same position as 100 years ago.
