Rules for Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine Family Photo of the Year competition

The Promoter is Immediate Media Company Bristol Limited.

The promotion is open to all residents of the UK, including the Channel Islands, except the Promoter’s employees or contractors and anyone connected with the promotion or their direct family members.

The closing date for entries is 11.59pm on 16 December 2021.

By entering the promotion, the participants agree:

  • to be bound by these terms and conditions;
  • all photos submitted may be used by Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine in print, online or via social media to promote the competition
  • that their surname and county of residence may be released if they are shortlisted or if they win a prize; and
  • that should they win the main prize, their name and likeness may be used by the Promoter for pre-arranged promotional purposes.

How to enter

Entrants should enter by email to familyphotocomp@immediate.co.uk with the category they are entering as the subject line (categories are: On Holiday; Special Occasion; Dressing Up; Solo Photo; Family Together; My Family and Other Animals).

Image files should be attached to the email in a standard picture format (JPEG, PNG, PDF) and should be scanned at high resolution (as a guide we suggest at least 300 dpi at 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cms).

Although all entries submitted must be in digital form, all entrants must own the original physical photograph and have copyright of the image. Please get permission of the person who took the photograph or their nearest living relative.

Entrants should include no more than 50 words on the photograph and why it should win. This should be in the body of the email and not an attachment.

Entries received after the closing date of the promotion will not be considered.

Postal entries will not be accepted.

Entrants must supply to Immediate Media Company Limited their full name, the county, city or other district where they live and daytime telephone number.

Entrants aged under 18 must state their age with their competition entry and confirm that they have permission to enter from their parent or guardian.

The Promoter will use entrants’ personal details in accordance with the Immediate Privacy Policy (www.immediatemedia.co.uk/privacy-policy).

Only one entry will be permitted per category per person (so a maximum of six entries per person). Each entry must be submitted in a separate email with the category in the subject line.

Receipt will be acknowledged by an automated email reply. Entrants should not approach Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine to verify receipt.

Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine cannot provide feedback on entries.

Judging

Six entries for each of the six categories will be shortlisted by Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine staff judging the image alone.

A panel of three judges, to include at least one not employed as Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine staff, will then choose a winner from the shortlist for each category. Only at this stage will the 50-word caption also be considered.

The overall winner will be selected from the six category winners. This winner will be chosen by a panel of six judges, to include at least two not employed as Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine staff.

Judging Criteria

Photographs will be judged on the following:

  • Character: does the photograph capture the character of the subject/subjects?
  • Composition: is the overall image well-balanced and interesting?
  • Impact: is this an image that stops you in your tracks?
  • Quality: we’re looking for crisp, high-resolution images
  • Rarity: old and unusual photographs will gain points here (this should help balance the issue of quality which can be trickier in older photographs)

Shortlisted and winning entrants

Shortlisted entrants should be willing to supply some basic personal information for publication in the magazine.

Shortlisted photographs and captions may be reproduced in the magazine or website (whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com) and may be shared on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

The winning photographs and captions will be published in issue 184 of the magazine – the March issue, out on 8 February 2022.

The Promoter’s decision as to the winner is final and no correspondence relating to the promotion will be entered into.

The overall winner will receive a prize of £200 which will be offered as a cheque or transferred electronically if preferred by the winner.

The winners of each category will receive a framed new print of their winning photograph as well as one year’s subscription (digital or print) to Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine. There is no cash alternative to this prize. Current subscribers to the magazine can have their free year subscription added to their account or can gift it to someone else.

The surname and county of residence of the winner will be available upon request by email to familyphotocomp@immediate.co.uk within two months of the closing date of the promotion.

The Promoter reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions or to cancel, alter or amend the promotion at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, or if circumstances arise outside of its control.

The Promoter does not accept any responsibility for lost, delayed or fraudulent entries.

The Promoter excludes liability to the full extent permitted by law for any loss, damage or injury occurring to the participant arising from his or her entry into the promotion or occurring to the winner arising from his or her acceptance of a prize.

The promotion is subject to the laws of England.
