Leopoldstadt district, Vienna

Ruby Wax begins her family history journey in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

After visiting her great aunt and uncle’s former dental practice, Ruby goes to the site of Leopoldstädter Tempel, the city’s largest synagogue, which was destroyed during Kristallnacht on 10 November 1938.

More information about the history of the synagogue can be found here.

Theresienstadt concentration camp

Eager to learn about the fate of Salomon and Gabriele Goldmann, Ruby travels by train to the city of Terezín in the Czech Republic.

Alighting at nearby Bohušovice nad Ohří, she visits the notorious Theresienstadt concentration camp, located in a former military fortess.

Vienna Central Cemetery

The cemetery where Ruby locates the final resting places of her grandfather, great grandfather and great aunt is Vienna's largest, and the site of many historically significant graves.

More information about visiting the cemetery can be found here. Many burials are listed on Find A Grave, as seen in Ruby’s episode.

Steinhof Hospital

The Viennese psychiatric institution where Ruby’s great aunt died is still a hospital today. It has a troubled past – during the Second World War it was used by Nazi scientists who experimented upon and murdered children.

Moravian Land Archives

Ruby Wax ends her search in Brno – the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It is home to the Moravian Land Archives, where Ruby discovers that her great grandmother, Berta, also died in a psychiatric hospital.
