Registration records

This guide was last updated in 2009

Missionary records may contain references to the births, marriages and deaths of family members in China, but they do not include returns as such.

The best source is the Consular Records series held by the General Register Office (GRO) and The National Archives (TNA).

It is worth investigating records held by both these bodies which partly duplicate and partly complement each other. For instance, details of consulate marriages are held by the GRO while Shanghai Cathedral Records are kept by TNA. To search online look for Overseas Births, Marriages and Deaths on the TNA website. To search for overseas records go to the GRO website.

Further information can be found in The British Overseas: a guide to records of their births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials (Guildhall Library, 1995) and Tracing Your Ancestors in The National Archives, by Amanda Bevan (TNA, 2006).
