The official deposit for public records in Northern Ireland has recently had an online overhaul and the results are impressive. Beginners should visit the ‘Family History’ section, where, under ‘Getting Started’, all the key sources are simply and clearly described, alongside 28 ‘Your Family Tree’ PDF guides to different aspects of research.

Online records include the Ulster Covenant (containing the signatures of 237,368 men and 234,046 women, from September 1912) and Freeholders records (lists of people eligible to vote). A project aiming to index and digitise wills from the District Probate Registries of Armagh, Belfast and Londonderry is almost complete.
