Ask your family

This guide was last updated in 2014

Canvassing family information is always the most important step, but it is especially vital in Ghana, where oral history is often the only surviving record.

Ask as many different branches and generations as possible, as everyone will have heard different stories. Remember that people may have two names – European ones and African ones.

For example, earlier Who Do You Think You Are? celebrity Hugh Quarshie’s ancestor was called both Efua Yankye and Ellen van der Speck. Try and find out as many specific names and places as possible.
