Scottish Estates – Rentals

Rentals can vary in the amount of information they record. Sometimes it is a summary account of the annual income of the estate without mentioning individuals.

If you are lucky, the rental will record things like the names of the tenants, the name, acreage and value of the land leased, the year in which the lease began, how long the lease is for, arrears, rents due, and sums received.

Occasionally notes are made such as the death of a tenant, information on certain buildings, or problems encountered with the tenant. If the records have survived, and there is a series of rentals for a particular estate, it can be possible to trace several generations of a family all working on a farm.
