Was he a naval officer?

This guide was last updated in 2011

If you are unsure whether your ancestor was an officer in the Royal Navy you need to consult the Navy List.

The New Navy List was an unofficial publication which mirrored the Official Navy List and many of these are available through Google Books.  Simply search for "Navy List" and the year.

If you find he was an officer then you can look at the registers of Officers’ Service.  These records are held at The National Archives in series ADM 196 but are available online through their Discovery catalogue.

There are other records held at The National Archives which detail not only the officer’s service but pension paid after he left so you can continue to follow his life after the Navy. This research guide tells you how.
