Ship service records

This guide was last updated in 2011

If you find your ancestor on the medal rolls you will get the name of a ship he served on.

The National Archives holds the ships’ logs in series ADM 53, of which there are more details here. Ships’ paybooks and musters can also be searched to confirm your ancestor's presence onboard.

To make use of musters, pay books and logs you will need to know the name of at least one he ship served on, and a rough date.

To search for a particular ship go to Discovery and search by ship's name (do not use HMS in your keywords), enter the years you are interested in and search within 'ADM', using the advanced search option.

Ships' musters are in ADM 38 and pay books in ADM 32 and ADM 117.
