Not an officer or a rating?

This guide was last updated in 2011

If your ancestor was neither an officer or a rating, then there's a chance that he could have been a Royal Marine.

These were ‘sea soldiers’ – fighting men who fought in sea and land battles. In this case, you will need the records held at The National Archives in Series ADM 157.

These are not digitised but staff there are currently listing these records by the name of individual, so try doing a search on Discovery. Keep checking, because names are being added on a regular basis.
