Find the church

This guide was last updated in 2009

Firstly, you need to establish whether your ancestor belonged to the Established Church of Scotland.

Consult the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae (ed. Hew Scott and others). This work gives biographical details of all known ministers of the Church of Scotland from the Reformation to the end of the 20th century – their education, ministerial careers, publications and family information.

The content of volumes is arranged under synod, with later additions after about 1915 – there are copies in many Family History centres and libraries. This work provides an excellent basis for further research.

There are also books giving details of ministers in the “dissenting” churches – Fasti of the United Free Church 1900-1929 (John Lamb), History of the Congregations of the United Presbyterian Church 1733-1900 (R. Small), Annals of the Original Secession Church (D. Scott), Annals of the Free Church of Scotland 1843-1900 (W. Ewing) and Scottish Episcopal Clergy 1689-2000 (David Bertie).
