Findmypast has added another 800,000 records to its Crime, Prisons and Punishment collection.
The collection is the largest searchable archive of British criminal records available online and now holds 6.6 million records.
The new records, taken from collections at The National Archives, span the years 1784-1939 and include registers of inmates from infamous prisons including Pentonville, Wormwood Scrubs, Millbank and Newgate as well as governor’s journals, trial records, lists of visitors, men in solitary confinement, baptisms at women’s prisons and more.
They also cover local prisons such as Chatham Prison, Bedford Gaol, Reading Gaol and Liverpool Gaol, as well as Gibraltar Prison overseas.
The records also include over 1000 mugshots of prisoners at Pentonville in 1876.
