Birth Certificate

Actor Martin Freeman knew little about his paternal side of the family, so to discover more we ordered the 1909 birth certificate of his grandfather Leonard William Freeman. Mothers’ maiden names do not appear in the indexes until the September quarter of 1911, and there were two Leonard William Freemans born in 1909. However, Martin told us the family was based in Hull, which helped us identify the right person. The certificate gave his date of birth and the address where he was born – as was common at the time, Leonard was born at home. Interestingly, it showed Martin’s great grandfather Richard William Freeman was an organist. It also confirmed Leonard’s mother’s name was Ada Louisa Freeman, formerly Meldrum. All this helped us trace the family on census returns, where we discovered that Richard and his wife Ada were both blind and ran a music school.
