Britain’s biggest family history society has announced plans to move from its home in Clerkenwell, London.

The Society of Genealogists (SoG) announced that it is seeking to leave its current address at Charterhouse Buildings on Goswell Road and will find a new home within the next three to five years.

In a statement, the society said it had “outgrown” Charterhouse Buildings, pointing to problems with the location including a lack of library space and a need for investment in repairs, maintenance and IT.

“Moving to more suitable premises will enable the Society to reinvest in our core services of providing the best genealogical library and collections in the UK, to continue and expand upon our education programme and to create a more convivial space for our members and users,” it added.

The society promised that the decision on a new home will involve consultation and input from stakeholders.

SoG was founded in 1911 and has occupied five addresses over the years, spending the last 35 years at Charterhouse Buildings.

It holds Britain’s largest genealogy library, hosts family history talks and events and offers a dedicated online hub and family history helpline for members.
