Genealogists now have improved access to records detailing the lives of their ancestors in south Wales following the re-opening of a major archive centre.

Based in the former Ebbw Vale Steelworks building, the new Gwent Archives includes new resources and state-of-the-art storage facilities. The renovated General Office is also home to a set of material from the Ebbw Vale Works Archival Trust, chronicling the area’s industrial heritage.

"The new Gwent Archives represents a major advance in archive storage and a superb research facility for family historians," says deputy county archivist, Tony Hopkins. "The new extension contains two main strongrooms with 10 kilometres of shelving capacity and a smaller photograph store; it also includes a large conservation studio viewable from outside the building."
