New burial and cremation records online

The details of thousands of people buried and cremated in sites around Britain have been added to a major online database.

The newly uploaded records, now available to browse at Deceased Online, include data from cemetery and crematoria registers in Cambridge, Gainsborough and the London Borough of Brent. More than 220,000 names are included in the collection, with dates ranging from the mid-19th century to the present day. In some cases, scanned images of the original documents can also be viewed, and all records are available to download on a pay-per-view basis, starting from £1.50.

The recent additions are part of an ongoing programme of digitisation at the site, and will be joined in the coming months by data from areas including Northamptonshire, Devon, at least one county in Scotland and several districts of London.

“We’re delighted to have introduced these records to our growing database, in line with our plans to add at least two million this year,” Deceased Online’s Head of Marketing Richard Grey told Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine. “We’re currently talking to local authorities around the UK and are looking forward to further substantial growth in areas across the country.”
