Genealogists tracing their ancestors from West Yorkshire may be able to take their research further following the completion of a major digitisation project.

The set of more than eight million parish registers, available to explore at www.ancestry.co.uk/yorkshire and digitised in partnership with the West Yorkshire Archive Service, date as far back as 1538 and can be searched by a range of details including first name and surname, date, location and keyword.

“This is an exciting moment for West Yorkshire’s archives – more and more people are researching family and local history and we’re delighted that our partnership with Ancestry.co.uk means that people can use our sources 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says Neil Taggart, chair of the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee. “The millions of names now available though Ancestry will help people all across the world trace their West Yorkshire ancestors.”

The release marks the latest stage in the ongoing digitisation of county records by Ancestry.co.uk, and follows the release of more than two million parish register entries from the county of Dorset earlier this month.
