Family history website Findmypast has unveiled a new design on its UK site.

The design, which went live at 11am this morning, includes a new logo with a purple background and a choice of four colour schemes for the text, replacing the previous logo with white text on blue.

Each of the four logos uses the handwriting of a different Findmypast user in the word 'My', reflecting the importance of Findmypast's community of users.

The website now has a new colour scheme and illustrations to accompany individuals in a family tree without a photograph.

In addition, it has a new slogan: ‘Where Will Your Past Take You?’

In a blog post, Findmypast said: “The new-look site is designed to encourage more family history beginners to get started, while staying true to its roots as the must-have genealogy resource experienced genealogists know and love.”

Findmypast’s research shows that 12% of Britons can’t trace their family tree beyond their parents, and 38% can only trace it as far as their grandparents.

The website says their goal is to change the statistics by “inspiring as many people as possible to discover their unique family story” and build “a bigger community” of family historians.

In September, Findmypast launched a new tree-to-tree hinting system, allowing users to receive hints from other members’ trees.

More family historians uploading their trees to the site could therefore allow existing family historians to make new discoveries.

Findmypast’s core features and services are unchanged by the redesign.

The redesign was initially launched on Findmypast's UK site.

At the time of writing, some pages on the site, such as the family trees, are still using the original design.

The new look will be rolled out on Findmypast’s American, Australian and Irish sites in the coming weeks.
