In the port city of Porbandar, Nitin meets a child mortality expert at the local record office who helps him to understand how eight of his mother’s siblings died. There is no tradition of registering deaths in India, but they do find a record stating that one of Nitin’s aunts died of a fever when she was just six years old.

In Kenya, Nitin visits Nairobi’s Railway Museum where he meets Professor David Anderson, an expert in East African history. David is not surprised that Nitin’s great grandfather came to Africa in the late 1890s - more than 32,000 Indians fled Gujarat because of a great famine. Nitin looks at pictures of South Asian labourers working on the railways and reads an account from the stationmaster that describes just how treacherous the work was.
