Hi there On my family tree for my Mothers family her mother (my Grandmother) On the grandmother side I have a Ida Mary Pestell. This name is not that common. My nans father is John Pestell 1851-1926. He married a Susannah Hayward 1851-1923. Johns father is also called John Pestell 1815- 1885. John Snr married Mary Ann Brown. Does any one know much about the Pestell name? Some trees have found a James Pestell as the father of John Pestell snr but he came from Bedfordshire. But other trees have no father for John Senior. My Pestells come from Norfolk. Does anyone know if this info is right? with this info, and has anyone found if there is a link between the two Pestells from Bedfordshire and Norfolk? Any advice will be appreciated. Julie

In the 1861 census in Palling, Norfolk,
John Pestell, age 46, a fisherman, was born Yarmouth
Mary P, age46, wife, born Winterton
Anners Dane, 19, dau-in-law, unmarried
James Dane, 17, son on law, unmarried
Walter Pestell, 15, son
Sarah A Pestell, 13, dau
John Pestell, 9, son
Jane Pestell,5, dau - all born in Palling.

The 1851 census also has John snr as a fisherman from Yarmouth.
In 1841, in the parish of Catfield he may be the John Pestell, age 25 in the household of:
William Pestell 65
Frances Pestell, 60 and
Phillis Pestell, 20
all were born in the County.

The only Bedfordshire link I find in the censuses is for 1891 where a 75 year old widower John Pestell is living with his single daughter Rachael. This is probably a different person, or their place of birth has been wrongly recorded.
