I am researching the men on our village war memorial who died in WW1. I cannot find a medal index card for one of the men. He is Ernest Ward who joined the Royal Field Artillery (service number 19174) and later transferred to 406 Agricultural Company, Labour Corps (523006). He died of influenza in Tadcaster (West Yorkshire) on 29 October 1918. Any suggestions on why he has no findable medal card would be appreciated or indeed any help in finding it.

I suggest you have a look at the Long Long Trail website which gives advice on lots of things to do with WW1, there is also a forum.

Good luck

Hi

It sounds like you have done a fair bit of research on this, so forgive me if I tell you what you already know. My quick search on TNA website using "Ernest Ward" and "Field Artillery" and "labour" brings up just two Service Medal Index Cards. Whilst the names and units tie in with your guy the regiment numbers do not, are you certain of the number you have?

I would revisit the records which gave you the regiment numbers and review. These are the records I have found which should be on Ancestry for viewing:

WO 372/20/223365
Medal card of Ward, Ernest E

Corps Regiment No Rank
Royal Field Artillery 62147 Gunner
Labour Corps 642192 Private

WO 372/20/223277
Medal card of Ward, Ernest

Corps Regiment No Rank
Labour Corps Southern 642192 62147 Private
Command ex Royal Field Artillery

Good luck
