My grandfather is listed on the absent voters register in 1920 as a private in the 793rd company of the royal army service corps, S36567. I have not been able to find any information about the 793rd company anywhere. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Logically (which is not necessarily correctly) someone with an S prefix should be in the Supply companies. Unfortunately, the Long, Long Trail website has ground to a halt with the Supply companies - see http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-army-service-corps-in-the-first-world-war/. My impression is that the answer will be in some big thick book published in just penny numbers and available at the National Archives and ?

If no-one here comes up with the answer soon, you need to raise the question in the Great War Forum. See http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php - these are the sort of guys who have big thick books on their shelves or know someone who has.

Hi Shamwari,

I may not be able to shed much light on this one, I do have some thick books but none on the R.A.S.C. I have however found a few references online to the 793rd being a HT coy (Horse Transport Company) based in Kensington Palace Barracks.

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=5mc ... .c&f=false

This is one link that references them. Not much to go on but may give some idea as to what he was up to.

Dan.

Thanks for that as it gives me a better clue what to Google on - "793 HT Company" finds this http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?/topic/143351-can-anyone-help-with-this-record-sheet-harry-woods-asc/ on the Great War Forum where someone with a big book adds a little bit (but not much) to what Dan found.

At any rate, Horse Transport seems to be what that company was. It might not, of course, be the only one that he served with.

I cannot take the credit or confirm the following but searches through various forums have given me this other info for you

"Col. Michael Young's history 'ASC 1902-1918' has the following – see Appendix Q, page 313
ASC Co. 793
Formed - 28 Aug 1916: Theatre/OoB – London, Kensington Palace: Role – HT Company, local duties
Disbanded – 9 Nov 1921: Theatre/OoB – Barracks: Role – Renumbered 7 HT Company 30 July 1920
No NA file listed"

Hope it helps.

Dan.
