Totley Tunnel - James Moore

My last census for my great grandfather James Moore is 1991 in Hathersage working on the Totley Tunnel in Derbyshire. In 1901 my great grandmother and four daughters are in London. In 1908 on my grandmother's marriage certificate it states that her father is deceased. I have looked at death certificates for London that would be appropriate with no luck. Where did the tunnel miners go when they left Totley?
Anybody out there that could help, I need to kill him off!

Pat, I laughed when you said you needed to kill him off !!
Obviously the last census you have for him is 1891-where and when was he born, as that should at least narrow down possibilities for you. He may not have gone to London and could have died anywhere in the country ! Did he have any middle names? With a ten year gap anything that can narrow him down the better. The problem is that I would think that tunnel miners could be navvies or labourers, and they travelled everywhere, one of my family led me a very merry dance all over the place before I found him.

Something that you have to remember is they may not have moved on at all but carried on building the railway [I assume you mean the railway tunnel] or may have moved on further down the line to the next tunnel. A lot of navvies where 'jacks of all trades' and would turn their hand to anything.

Unless you find your James Moore I would check the 1911 cencus just in case. I have a Great Great Grandfather who I have on the 41, 51, 61 and 71 census' with his family, I can't find him anywhere on the 81, his wife is listed as widow, I couldn't find a death for him between 71-81 but up he pops again on the 91 census [in the workhouse] and he dies later in 1891. Incidently his wife [living with a son] lists herself as married on that one!

I was lucky in that he had an unusual first name, so was easier to search for. I posted a query on here about him and someone suggested that if he was moving from one place to another, and spending the night under tht stars, then on census night then he will not be listed.
Good luck!!
