HI
My grandfather Walter MILES served in the Navy in both WWI & II. I remember he used to tell me a story when I was a child of being promoted rapidly up through the ranks to Chief Petty Officer in one day during a particularly fierce battle. I don't know which war this was in. I wonder if I could identify these medals & badges it may be give me some clue to go on?

I've just examined the original and on the back there is a date stamp

07 Jan 192? but I can't make out the final digit it could be a 0 a 3 or a 5 so that makes it between the 2 wars.

I don't know much about medals and badges so cannot identify them in this picture for certain. However I Googled Chief Petty Officer RN 1920 cap badge and found several references , including one from the Imperial War Museum , stating that in 1920 a laurel wreath was added to the CPO's cap badge. There appears to be a laurel wreath on this man's badge which would indicate that he was already a CPO at the time of the photograph. Checking the UK Navy Medal & Award Rolls on ancestry I found CPO Walter Miles , number F 21368 , who received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal in WW1. It does seem possible. that this is your Walter.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge of uniforms etc. will have something to add.

Thank you - most interesting. He joined up in 1908 so I have to think that he must have been awarded the other three medals prior to WWI.

yumyum,
medals are worn in strict order. I can't Identify the first two but then it is 1914 star,1914/18 war medal,
1914/18 victory medal, long service medal. the first two must be either earlier campaign medals which is unlikely as he joined too late for boer war or Gallantry medals, this may back up the story about being promoted quickly. if they are Gallantry I would expect them to show on his medal card.

I found an entry on TNA for CPO Walter Miles and I don't think he's the right one after all..This Walter enlisted 1916 and served with Royal Navy Air Division which later became part of Royal Flying Corps - it doesn't sound like your Walter at all.

Hi

Thanks for this - I found out his service number is F 21368 and I found a record for WWI that lists the 3 medals. I'm guessing the other ones must have been earlier battles but as you say the Boar war is to early for him. Do you think the Royal Navy would know if I wrote to them?

Hi

Yes, he is right it is for the wrong man - I just took the number from my Ancestry tree last night but I just checked and it has saved it under the incorrect man - but Walter my granddad is on the same page with the number 237986 I managed to download the service record and cross check and everything matches including his birthday. But...the writing is so small and lots of the ships turn out not to be ships but 'hulks' they were put up in when not at sea so it has not been alot of help in trying to find out where he might have got these other medals from earlier. So I still need to do a lot more digging - thanks for your help it has been much appreciated :-)
