Merchant navy CR10 Certificate.

Postby toekneem » Sun Dec 15, 2013 11:34 am

Hi. Could do with some advice on this.
I have a John Henaghan born 1896 in Northumberland. He was lost at Sea when his ship the SS Radhurst was sunk in WW2 in 1943. I have I believe all the info about this.
Searching earlier, I found his Merchant Navy CR10 certificate stating his number 478080, his name ,Rank Date and place of birth. (This is upto 1921)
On the second page or other side we have a photo of him (Fantastic find for the family).
Beside the photo is what appears to read: Francia 30-4-20

Due to image size limitations I am only showing the second side where it shows Francia and what appears to be a date

Doing a search brings up a cargo ship Francia . Trouble is the Francia ran aground and was wrecked of North Cornwall in 1917 so if the above numbers are dates something is wrong.

Advice,help would be appreciated

It looks as if there was another Francia lost in Jan 1923. There are reports on the British Newspaper Archive website of the loss of this steamer, owned by the British Dominion Steamship Company, and the subsequent suspension of the Shipmaster's certificate.

You do not say where you have found your information so I hope I am not suggesting things you have already tried. Have a look in the Military Help posts for the one under the name of JJMcDuff. I made some suggestions there that may be of use to you. Hope that is a little bit of help.

The National Archives has information about this ship: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... =C10691532
"Ship Francia, official number: 136806. When built: 1915. Registry closed: 1923" - It's not digitised, but you can order a copy

There's also a report on the inquest of her sinking http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLi ... /20534.asp - the 2nd of Jan 1923 was when the inquest was closed, the ship foundered on 2nd Nov 1922
