Jacob Prime from America

Postby grumps » Tue Dec 03, 2013 1:23 pm

I am trying to find a birthplace for a Jacob Prime. He was born in America approximately 1849. He married in 1870 in Bethnal Green to Elizabeth Bailey. I am not sure how to trace Immigration records from the states. The marriage is the first record i can find. Can anyone help me please.

It is too early for passenger lists, but there is no sign he was naturalised which would have helped, As American records are kept locally and not nationally it is going to be an issue. There is a Jacob Prime in the Criminal Registers area of the ancestry website in 1870, the records should be at The National Archives in Kew. Do you have an occupation as I would suggest that it would be more usual for people to be travelling to America then from.

Thanks for the quick reply. In 1870 his occupation was listed as waiter. He then went through poultier fishmonger and porter over the next 20 years. He stayed in the same areas throughout.

Could he have been born in America only coincidentally because maybe his father was there at the time in the army, navy, prospecting, etc, but parents were actually English/Welsh or Irish or Scottish? You could try the military births indexes, though these are only patchy for the time frame - sorry don't have access to them at the moment.

Hello
Had a look at the English censuses.
1871 Bethnal Green Old Castle st
Charles J Prime 23 porter US
Elizabeth 22 London.
His marriage at the same address gives his father as John Prime waiter
Possible birth Jacob Mark Prime Massachusetts 29.10.1848 to John and Rebecca Prime born Howard cty Indiana on Familysearch but that doesn't fit with the 'Charles' bit in 1871 and he seems to stay in the US.
He should also show up on the US censuses for 1850 and 1860 but there is only that one I can see.
Sorry to not to be of more help

Hello. Yes I thought I'd found him in Jacob mark but some existing trees have him married and staying in America. I've found him on censuses from 1871-1891.thanks though
