Mary Yates of Alconbury, Huntingdonshire, 1875

Postby hassamal » Fri Nov 29, 2013 1:13 pm

I’m searching for the family of my great grandmother, Mary Yates.

Mary gave birth to a son, William Thomas Yates, on 7 October 1875 in the Union Workhouse, Cranbrook, Kent and then married my great grandfather, Andrew Henry Styles, in Cranbrook on Christmas Day the following year: she gave her age as 29 and her father’s name as William Yates. She appears in all four of the subsequent Censuses (1881 to 1911), giving her year of birth consistently as around 1844 and her birthplace as Alconbury or Alconbury Weston in Huntingdonshire.

The records show a Mary Yates born to William and Jane Yates (born Scuffham) in Alconbury in June 1837, the family living in Huntingdon Union in 1841. But this Mary Yates would have been 39, not 29, when marrying my 22 year-old-great grandfather and almost 52 when giving birth to my grandfather, John Edwin Styles. I think the family would have noticed if she was 10 years older than claimed and giving birth to my grandfather when she was 52 is even less plausible.

I am at a loss to know where to look next. The Cranbrook Workhouse records for 1875 no longer exist and even her son, William Thomas, disappears after the 1891 Census. I would like to know something of her parents and what became of her son William.

Many thanks.

There is an unsourced family tree on Ancestry, which claims a birth about 1844 for Mary Yates, daughter of William Yates and Jane Scuffham who apparently married 27 Jan 1839 at Alconbury-cum-Weston. The tree owner is Julienne Gross. Have not yet been able to find the family on the 1851 census at Alconbury, though she has. Will keep looking.

Hi,

I have a memory (and hopefully a note somewhere) of having followed that up and discounted it in favour of the 1837 date. But your fresh pair of eyes suggests I should take another look at it, which I will do in the next couple of days. I'm grateful for your suggestion.

Having now browsed through the Alconbury & Alconbury Weston census images on Ancestry for 1851, the only YATES family I have found is the one that I think you refer to:
William, 38, Ag lab
Jane, 35
Mary 13
John 11
Elizabeth 10
Sarah 7
James 5
Henry 2
William 4mths
Mary Draper, lodger, widow, 78

The family tree on Ancestry has some subtle differences with these children:
John YATES 1839 – 1872
Elizabeth YATES 1841 –
MARY YATES 1844 – 1922
James YATES 1846 –
Henry YATES 1849 –
William YATES 1851 –
Soloman YATES 1855 –
Eliza YATES 1857 –
Mary Ann YATES 1859 –
Sadly, the only item that has a source attached is the marriage of William Yates to Jane Scuffham on 27 Jan 1839.

Checking on FreeBMD for a birth for Mary Yates in Huntingdonshire 1839-1849 only produces one result: which may corresponds to what you found:
Births Jun 1839 Yates Mary Caxton &c 14 32

Incidentally, although very unusual, it is not impossible for a woman of 52 to still be fertile, and not yet have reached menopause.
Have now gone to www.familysearch.org for this family - they seem to have some of the children of William & Jane baptisms recorded, but not Mary - only Mary Ann, b. 1859:

John Yates
christening: 23 June 1839 Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdon, England

Elizabeth Yates
christening: 24 January 1841 Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdon, England

James Yates
christening: 11 April 1846 Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdon, England

Eliza Yates
christening: 1 March 1857 Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdon, England

Mary Ann Yates
christening: 13 January 1859 Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdon, England

If you haven't already done so, I think you should consult the parish registers yourself for Alconbury and Alconbury-Weston.
Good hunting! Sylvia

I am afraid I am going to complicate matters even further, rather than help.

1841 census for Frumetty Lane, Alconbury lists
Wilm Yates, born c1816, Ag Lab
Jane Yates, born c1816
Mary Yates, born c1837
John Yates, born c1839
Elizabeth Yates, born 1840

1851 census for Alconbury (no road shown)
William Yates, born c1813, Ag Lab
Jane Yates, born c1816
Mary Yates, born c1838
John Yates, born c1840, Ag Lab
Elizabeth Yates, born c1841
Sarah Yates, born c1844
James Yates, born c1846
Henry Yates, born c1849
William Yates, born 1850
Mary Draper, born 1773 (shown as a widow and lodger)

It is on the 1861 census that matters become complicated. Mary Yates (born c1837) does not appear with the family but another daughter Mary Ann (born 1859) is included with the family group. Mary Ann Yates was christened on 13 January 1859 at Alconbury-cum-Weston the daughter of William and Jane Yates. (Birth registered Q1 1859 Huntingdon Vol 3b Pg 263). I cannot find a census record for Mary Yates (born c1837) on either the 1861 or 1871 census and if Mary (born 1859) is the daughter of William and Jane the fact that they reuse the name Mary could be an indication that Mary (1837) had died but I have not been able to trace a death record. Of course there is the possibility that Mary (1859) was the illegitimate daughter of Mary (1837) and William and Jane brought her up as their own daughter (pure speculation on my part).

1861 census for Frumety Lane, Alconbury
William Yates, born c1808, Ag Lab
Jane Yates, born c1817
Betsy Yates, born c1841
Henry Yates, born 1849
William Yates, born1851
Solomon Yates, born c1855
Eliza Yates, born c1857
Mary Ann Yates, born c1859

1871 census for Hill End or Rust’s Lane, Alconbury
William Yates, born c1807, Ag Lab
Jane Yates, born c1817
James Yates, born 1846, Ag Lab
Mary Ann Yates, born c1859, Scholar

By the time of the 1881 census Mary Ann is working as a servant for a Charles Windover in Cannon Street, Huntingdon. It would therefore appear that this Mary cannot be the Mary who gave birth to William Thomas.

We therefore return to Mary (1837). Because I lose trace of her after 1851 census I do not know what became of her and if she is the same person who gave birth to William. However people lying about their ages is not uncommon, particularly if there is a big gap between the ages of husband and wife.

So having been no help at all I will now sign off.

Paul,

I will check what you and Sylvia have discovered against my own records. But I fear that, having fallen into this hole myself, I have merely invited others to fall into it too.

The intriguing question, for me, is how this particular woman ended up so far from home.

Many thanks,

Andrew

Have you considered or checked to see if Sarah YATES, daughter of William and Jane may be Mary? She was born c1844 and may have adopted her sister's name for some reason.

The short answer is no, that didn't occur to me. It sounds worth looking into and I'll report back as soon as I have had a chance to follow it up.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It seems that Sarah, the daughter of William and Jane Yates, died in Alconbury in 1852. I wish she had been Mary, it was worth considering.

Thanks,

Andrew
