Help on C19th military uniform

The attached photo was taken in c 1890 probably in Liverpool
Any help identifying the uniform would be much appreciated

It seems to have similarities to the uniform of Guards regiments. The buttons may well be definitive, but the image does not show them clearly enough to be used as an identifier. What would be more useful would be a picture of the soldier with his head wear and showing a cap badge!

Actually, have had a closer look at the badge on his collar - it could be that of The Royal Fusiliers. The Regiment has several museums around the country, including one in Lancashire, http://www.fusiliersmuseum-lancashire.org.uk/ so you could try sending them a copy of the photo for confirmation or rejection.

If you could tell us something about the young man - name, d & p of birth/death etc, then we could maybe come at the problem from a different angle to identify the uniform.

It is a royal artillery uniform, they wore the fusil on the collar.
