81st Pioneer India Army

Postby grandmabear » Wed Sep 04, 2013 10:38 pm

My great Grand Uncle was born in New Zealand but went to Australia to join up for WW1 he trained in the Australian Wireless and signalling corps and left for the east in 1916. going to Ceylon and then India, he then changed to the 81st Pioneers and served with them leaving as a lieutenant.
I am wondering why he would have changed and who are the 81st Pioneers?

The 81st Pioneers were an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. They could trace their origins to 1786, when they were raised as the 28th Madras Battalion.
The regiment was first called into action for the campaigns in the Third Anglo-Mysore War. They then took part in the Battle of Seringapatam in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. Next they were involved in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, where they fought at the Battle of Nagpore in 1817. In 1879 they were involved in their first campaigns outside of India, when they took part in the Second Afghan War. This was followed in 1885 by the Third Burmese War. They returned to India and took part in the Tirah Campaign in 1897, attached to the Second Division, they did not see any serious fighting until late in the campaign, when they served as the divisional rearguard during a withdrawal 28 December 1897. During World War I they took part in the Mesopotamia Campaign.[1] They also raised a second battalion during the war which was only disbanded in 1921.[1]

After World War I the Indian government reformed the army moving from single battalion regiments to multi battalion regiments.[2] In 1922, the 81st Pioneers became the 10th (Training) Battalion, 1st Madras Pioneers. This regiment was disbanded in 1933.

I looked up the 81st Pioneers in the 1919 Indian Army List earlier in the week and have taken a photocopy of the pages for the 1st and 2nd Battalions. You didn't give the name of your relative, but was it Lieut C W Snelling? He is the only one shown to have an origin in the AIF. Was in the 2nd Battalion which was formed at St Thomas Mount.

Thank you both for your replies, I am interested in what the 81st pioneers were, as I had no idea so thank you again.
Sylvia Thank you and the person I was interested in was T.M. Bregmen , he started out with the Australian wireless and signal corps, then changed to the pioneers. ( Theodore Montague Bregmen)
I have wondered why he went to Australia to sign up for the war but recently found he had passed his riverboat captains certificate so wondered if he had gone there to work beforehand. It was 1913 when he became a boat captain.
Thank you again

OK - I've found him now in the 1st Battalion in the "Attached" list - but no mention of any Australian service:
1st Comm or date of entering service: 22 July 1917
Name & rank: Bregman, 2nd-Lt, T.M.
Army rank: 22 July 1917
Remarks: I.A.R.O. (Indian Army Reserve of Officers)

I will try and upload a scan of the page.
