35 Findlay Street Glasgow 1893 who lived there?

Postby Grandma Jedi » Sun Jul 28, 2013 1:01 pm

My great grandmother gave birth to an illegitimate child in 1893 at 35 Findlay Street in Glasgow. How can I find out who lived at this address and what type of house it was? Maybe the house is still there, could it have been a home for unmarried mothers?

Thanks for any help.

I believe Findlay Street was renamed Stow Street sometime before 1940 (http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-streetschanged1.html) and that it was demolished sometime in the late 1960s/early 1970s (see photograph on http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/viewtopic.php ... mp;start=0); although I am sure our Glasgow members will correct me if I am wrong.

Post Office Directories for Scotland are available online at http://www.nls.uk/family-history/direct ... ost-office with some 115 directories held for Glasgow and whilst there are a number of entries for Findlay Street I have not been able to trace a specific mention of 35.

However the 1901 census lists 10 families living at 35 Findlay Street (11 families living at No. 26 and 10 at No. 27) and I would suggest that this could be a tenement building.

The Valuation Rolls for 1895 are online at Scotland's People for 1895 which may help.

Thank you both for your help. I am still struggling to find information when I don't know the surname of the person I am looking for. I have access to Ancestry but how do I view the 1901 census for Findlay Street in Glasgow when I don't have a surname?

I wouldn't bother with ancestry as they don't have the images and their transcription is poor. Try the Valuation Rolls on Scotland's People and then use the name of the house of household in the census (for which they have the images) to see if they are still there. Have you thought of contacting the Mitchell Library in Glasgow?.

Hi there. I think my great grandmother was called Rachel Handyside McCormick. She was married to Samuel McCormick and it shows they were living at 35 FINDLAY Street Glasgow at the time of 1901. This would ring true as I know I had a lot of my mums family staying and coming from the cowcaddens area of Glasgow. My grans name was Catherine McCormick and she married William Rutherford and they lived in Wemyss Street in cowcaddens Glasgow. Do you know any of those names?

Hi, I see this is an older enquiry but I have just joined. You may have an answer by now but if not, I suggest you use the great granny's name in the 1891 census to see if she was in Findlay street prior to the birth. Re any census search on Ancestry you can search with a first name only , with a surname only, date, place or whatever. It just increases the number of returns. Experiment with results you know and you'll see what I mean. I found someone by a year + a place of birth recently as she had changed her name.
I agree you need to check the original census returns as there are a lot of transcription entries on Ancestry.

Findmypast.com allows you to type in an address without a name in the census.
I searched 1891 but that exact address didn't appear.
1901 lists three people born around 1893:

Joseph Fuller, Head, Married, Male, 36, 1865, Hand Sewn Boot Maker's Journeyman, London, Middlesex
Martha Kane, Wife, Married, Female, 32, 1869, -, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Mary Arr Kane, Daughter, -, Female, 9, 1892, Scholar, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
James H Kane, Son, -, Male, 6, 1895, Scholar, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Arthur Kane, Son, -, Male, 0, 1901, -, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Annie Hughes, Boarder, Single, Female, 27, 1874, Furrier, Wales

and

Samuel Lynch, Head, Married, Male, 57, 1844, Electric Light Wireman, Ireland
Mary A Lynch, Wife, Married, Female, 32, 1869, -, Ireland
Margaret Lynch, Daughter, -, Female, 12, 1889, Scholar, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
John Lynch, Son, -, Male, 7, 1894, Scholar, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Samuel Lynch, Son, -, Male, 4, 1897, -, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Hope this helps.
