Jamaican Records

Postby Artognou » Mon Jul 01, 2013 4:22 pm

Hi all,

I have recently been helping a neighbour with some family research and I have found a few bits and pieces on familysearch, but I've been trying to find her grandfather, who was known as Alexander Bessasa, we're not sure if the name was Bessasa or Bessa-sa/Bessa Sa, having seen a photo of him, I would guess that he was of Native American descent (not sure whether it's North or South American descent), but also of Hispanic descent, due to the name.
Could someone tell me where the best place is to start with Jamaican records?
I know they can be tricky sometimes!

Many thanks in advance,

Alex.

I'm researching Jamaican family at the moment and found the digitised parish registers and civil registers on familysearch really useful. I've also found the Jamaican newspaper records on MyHeritage useful but I searched for Alexander Bessasa for you and couldn't find him there. I've also checked the newspaper records on newspaperarchive.com. I've also found this website useful: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jamwgw/index.htm but I'm not sure if any of the links are for the right period you are looking for. Anyway, might be worth a link. I suspect there are some better Jamaican specialists on this forum who can help you more!

Hi Sarah,

Thankyou so much for the link, I shall look into that for sure.

The era I'm looking at is 1930 and before, I know that a Cassie Grant had 3 children with Alexander Bessasa and I think she had 5 other siblings and their mother was Lydia Grant, but it's proven more difficult than anything I have had to research before!

Can I also recommend the Caribbean Family History Group, http://caribbeanfamilyhistorygroup.com/ who helped me tremendously in my research of my Jamaican based ancestors.

Hi Zackie,

Thanks for the reply, I've been researching the Bessasa line for my neighbour, she's also a grandchild of Alexander by his son Stanley.

We'd dearly love to know any further details about him and any family and I know she'd also love to speak to family she's never known.

Regards,

Alex.
