Archives, libraries and places of interest in the North East

Postby familytreenat » Wed Jun 12, 2013 4:33 pm

I am going up to the North East for a few days next month to do a little research on my ancestors from the North East.

Can anyone recommend any good places to visit? So far on my list I have:

The Beamish Museum

The Durham Light Infantry Museum

The Northumberland & Durham Family History Society Research Centre

Tyne & Wear Archives

Thanks for your help!

Depends on whether you're going for research or just looking for good days out. I enjoyed going to Vindolanda, Cragside (NT property) is supposed to be amazing and I loved Belsay Hall which is a grand, empty house with amazing rock filled gardens that you walk through until you get to a ruined medieval castle - all fantastically atmospheric. For family history research, check out the collection at Durham University Library in case there's anything there that you need: http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/

Not only is Hartlepool home to the famous (or should I say 'infamous') Monkey Hangers but also of the oldest warship afloat HMS Trincomalee which is worth seeing.

The old quay area has been turned into a tourist area which, for anyone intersted in maritime history, is certainly worth a visit. http://www.hartlepoolsmaritimeexperience.com/

PS. If you don't know about the 'monkey hangers' google it!
