Woolhouse cup and saucer - Sheffield

Postby SandraMoody » Tue May 28, 2013 12:02 pm

This cup and saucer has been passed down the woolhouse family.
The inscription reads : " Presented to mary woolhouse, 1875 by A.B. "
Through research we know Mary (nee Bradshaw) Woodhouse was born around 1834,
Can anyolne help to identify where the cup and saucer could have come from or why it was presented?
It appears to be hand painted, with no markings on the base of the cup or saucer.

If her maiden name was Bradshaw, was the cup and saucer a present from one of her relations? Possibly on her marriage to Mr Woolhouse.

It's hard to tell without any further details of her parents or husband.

Does the cup or saucer have any markings underneath? These may not be words or even painted letters - perhaps more of a "maker's mark".

I'm sure there must be a local auction house somewhere near you. Most auction houses do free valuation days. Take it along to one of these and they should be able to help you - not everything they see is like the Antiques Roadshow!

Many thanks for your reply. I am unable to see any markings on the cup or saucer but will try to visit an auction house.
