I'm told that this is a naval uniform from about 1900. Can anyone confirm this?

Is there any chance that it could be Army rather than Navy?
I would say that the insignia on his belt looks very similar, although difficult to see, to that of the grenadier guards.
Furthermore, the insignia on his left sleeve looks very much like the old ranking of a Second Lieutenant, the first step on the ladder of the ranks of an Army Officer holding the commission.
Would be great to know how you get on but that's what I would guess at. Hope this helps!! I may be way off.

Given that Royal Navy sailors' uniforms are utterly different from soldiers', I can only presume someone thought it was a Royal Marine. However, I have failed to find any image of a Marine wearing that sort of cap, whereas it looks typical for Army.

Yes I agree this is almost certainly a army uniform. If that is a grenade on his belt buckle it would suggest he was in the artillery. A look at one of the websites showing Victorian military uniforms could be helpful. Jeff Ward.
