Photo, Age and Uniform Help required

Postby emben » Mon Feb 18, 2013 11:45 am

Hi
I have been told that there is a member of my family on the attached photo but am trying to work out if it would have been my Great grandfather or my Great Great grandfather.

Can anyone help in aging the photo, any help in relation to the Army Regiment, Year and area would be helpful. In fact any help at all.

I am told that the picture was taken in India!

Thank you in anticipation.

Hello

I can't help with details of regiment etc but I believe the photo was taken in India, if you look at the window at the left of the photo there is someone wearing a turban inside the building. I can't see the right hand side of the photo properly as there is an annoying advert over it!

Rita

PS I have just discovered that when you scroll down to look at the photo when sending a reply then the advert isn't there, excellent.

your best bet for a regimental id would be the chap in the middle row with the pipe as his badge, which appears to be quite large, is visible but not clear, A better scan of the image may help.

There are a mixture of ranks including Privates, lance corporals, corporals, sargents and one Colour Sargent (in the middle row with a sash)

Various of the men have crossed rifle badges on their left sleeves a some have what look like stars on their right sleeves of 1, 2 or three, which could denote periods of overseas service as in the Great War they had upturned chevrons in the same area.

I do not know if this was taken overseas and unlike the previous person I cannot make out a man in turban in the window but I did notice there are bars on all the windows, and the child does seem out of place, would he be in a photo overseas and is he dressed for India?

I would suggest seeing if you can find obituaries for either of your suspected relatives as often they mention previous military history, if they have an obituary.

More specialist military advice is needed I am afraid.

Do let us know what you find out

I notice the one in the back row on the extreme left seems to have a different colour uniform and is wearing an Australian Army-style slouch hat. Might this be a Boer War picture?

Thank you everyone for your help. I have managed to try and get a sharper picture and it may be that there is a man in the window with a turban on it is a little clearer on a bigger scale, which I cannot upload on here. And my Great Grandfather was in the Boar War so again that could be right x

Thanks Emma

PS if anyone can shed anymore light I would still be grateful

If you have names(s) the following site has a list of some (about 15000) who fought in the Boer War

We have a photo that looks very similar to your photo in the April edition on WDYTYA, of my husbands grandfather.

We believe it was taken in India and took part in the Tirah campaign of 1897.

He enlisted into the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry at Fairford on the 1st June 1896

He was also stationed at Lucknow and received the following medals;
1895 India Medal with clasps
1897-98 Punjab Frontier
1897-98 Tirah

probably discharged in 1903 He married in 1908

I think his brothers were also in the 2nd Boer War having traced the family tree. I need to research this further.

Hope this helps can email photo if you require.
