Help date picture of unknown lady

Postby yumyum46 » Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:45 pm

I was hoping someone could offer me some insight to this portrait card of an unknown lady. I think she may be Harriett BARNAT born 1847 ish in Wickwar, Glos or maybe her mother Jane GALE born in Mountbourne, Wiltshire in about 1825. The back of the photo records that it was taken by Mower & Co, 19a Westgate st, Bath.

Thanks for looking :-)

Research says there was a Mower photograph studio in Bath around 1876, but wristwatches for ladies became popular in 1920s and more in the 1930s. Perhaps someone with knowledge of furniture might be able to help to date the chair, have you looked on the census for Mower & Co.

Thannks, I had a quick look of Google and you are in deed correct - I never thought that I would find info on a long closed photographers on the interent :-) So it looks like with the watch and the photographers I'm looking at a date between the 1920s and 30s.
Thanks

Hi there,
This photo cannot be either of the ladies you mention. The loose style of dress and simple hairstyle date it to between 1913 and 1922 and most likely 1917 to 1920. At that time young ladies would be photographed for their 16th, 18th or 21st birthdays or at the time of their engagement. This could have been taken to send to a sweetheart at the Front.
The following websites are very good for info on old photographers;

cartedevisite co uk [Extensive lists with a charge for details] [Mower & Co are included]

historicaldirectories org [free access to fully searchable old trade directories nationwide]
I searched Somerset and several Bath directories appeared. 1884-85 has Henry Mower,photographer at 5 Argyle Place,Grove Street. 1895 has 53 hits for photographer but no Mower in any business. 1911 has Mower & Co as 192 Westgate St and Mower &Co 15 Orange Grove both photographers, so that would seem to clinch the dates.
