Gibraltar 1850's

Postby sammarkley » Sat Oct 20, 2012 2:24 pm

My 3rd grandfather Henry Barfoot, born 1820 Thumaston Leicestershire, married Maria Kemble Jan 1844 Dover Kent. In the 1851 Census he is living in Plumstead Kent and is in the Royal Artillary. The next census that he appears in is 1881 Tupton Derbyshire. But in 1855 he has a child Maria born in Gilbraltar.
Is there anyway of finding any information about why he was in Gilbraltar and if it had anything to do with the army? Anybody Please.

Hi,

Service records for the period are on findmypast and the record for Henry Barfoot is among them. In brief :

Gunner Henry Barfoot , frame work fitter by trade , b 1819 Thrumaston , attested for the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Leicester 5 Sep 1839 and was discharged on completion of 21 years service , 14 1/2 years of which were spent in Gibraltar.
