Tracing Indian Ancestors... Without Going To London

Postby Broadsword » Mon Feb 11, 2008 6:36 pm

My granfather is currently researching our family tree and wants to further investigate the Asian side of the family. Unfortunately it would be very hard for him and my gran-mother to visit the Indian Office of the British Library in London.

I was wondering if anyone knows of an online alternative or another possibly more local (South-west) place of information.

Many thanks

There are some sites that can help with research into ancestors who lived in India. One is [link=http://www.fibis.org/]http://www.fibis.org[/link] which allows searches of a large number of records, including the usual BMDs as well as arrivals/departures and biography records. There are also a couple of rootsweb mailing lists for India. Archives of these can be found at [link=http://archiver.rootsweb.com/INDIA-L/]http://archiver.rootsweb.com/INDIA-L/[/link] and [link=http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ/]http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ/[/link] . The listers are very helpful, but do try some searches first, as a lot of questions can be answered by searching the archives.
