Help with service in India

Postby franlynch » Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:43 pm

From delving in to my family tree I have discovered that my great grandfather, John Kearns, who was from Queenstown, Co. Cork (Cobh), served in India and that 'a few' of his children were born there. He was born in 1856 but I have no further information. what is my best way to proceed with this? Thanks

Not entirely sure what you want to achieve, but guess that you hope to find records of his children's births/baptisms in India and what became of them. The easiest place to start is with Family Search, http://www.familysearch.org which has indexed a large number of the India Office records of baptism, marriage and burial from the collection held at the British Library. On the Family search home page scroll down to "browse by location", select Asia and Middle East, then within the list of databases that are shown click on "India, births and baptisms 1786-1947" (or whichever dataset you want). Should warn you that the India Office collection is not so strong on Roman Catholic records.

Will get back to you again later with further suggestions.
Good hunting! Sylvia

Another website which may help you are Families in British India Society - http://www.fibis.org .
If John Kearns was in the British Army when his children were born, then their births may be registered through the Army and appear in the overseas indexes - available on http://www.findmypast.com. If the births were late enough (you didn't provide any time frame for your request, except JK's birth year) then they may also be indexed in the Irish bdm supplementary indexes which start about, um, 1883 from memory.
