Looking for help identifying medal

Postby markgowdy » Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:26 am

Hi

I'm looking for some assistance identifying specifics about my great-grandfather's medal. It looks to be related to some lodge or Friendly Society. I know I.O.F. is the Independent Order of Foresters. However, I am not sure about the reason he would have been given it, or what the Leinster Encampment would be.

Any guidance you can offer would be warmly received.

Thanks

Mark

Mark,

Can I suggest that you contact the Foresters Friendly Society at
Foresters Friendly Society, 29-33 Shirley Road, Southampton, Hampshire SO15 3EW
Tel: (023) 8022 9655 Fax: (023) 8022 9657 Email: mail@foresters.ws

They have an Official Historian, Audrey Fisk, who may be able to provide some aswers for you.

I have to admit being a bit confused. Although I know very little about the Foresters, I always understood that in Britain they were known as the Ancient Order of Foresters, but that the name changed in North America to the Independant Order of Foresters. The I.O.F and L.B.C on the ribbon do tie in with ribbons on American medals. However the title Sir Knight on the clasp does not appear to be a Forester's title but more like a Knights Templar title. However, as I have said, my knowledge on these societies is very limited and Audrey Fisk may be able to provide more meaningful information.
