WW1- what determines which army unit...

Postby annabarton » Thu Mar 01, 2012 4:46 pm

When someone enlisted or was conscripted in WW1, what would determine which army unit and army base they would become apart of? Did birthplace, current place of residence and/or occupation have an affect.

Just that one branch of my family tree has a common name and finding a way to narrow searches for military records would be useful, particulary as some records/search hits only have an initial and not a full first-name.

thank you

I don't think there is a simple answer to that question unfortunately.

Often men enlisted in their local county regiment but even that is not certain.

As has been said there is no hard and fast rule, one of my grandfathers signed on at Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow for the Gordon Highlanders because that was the local regiment where he was born in Aberdeenshire, rather than the local regiment for the Glasgow area.
