WWI Uniform help please

Postby rotulaw » Sat Feb 18, 2012 6:25 pm

Can anyone please help me identify the regiment in the above photo? Could it be the Black Watch?
I am trying to find a photo of my wife's grandfather Private John H Shepperd who won a DCM medal in WW1. He was in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Many thanks for any help. Roland

It doesn't look like a Black Watch badge to me. There's a picture of the Black Watch badge here:

I've had a look here: http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/badget11.htm
This is a brilliant site and there are several badges which could match the badge in your photo but it's difficult to see the badge with any detail. You may be able to see the badge better in the original photo.

Hello again Roland

The chap in the photo could be from the Scottish Horse Regiment.

I came across the citation for John H Shepperd's DCM and have posted it for you if you have not already seen it yet.

Is there any chance of a close up of the collar and shoulder in the photo please, I have tried enlarging it but as it is from the posted image it comes out blurry.

Regards

Rich

Hello Roland,

Been doing a little more digging on John H Shepperd, I have found his ww1 medal index card and it gives the same number 24572 as is mentioned on his DCM citation but he is shown as being in the 1/6th RH. I have attached an image of the Card for you. Hope it helps a bit. The card also notes his mention in the London gazette, which you can access for free on line.

Regards

Rich

Thank you all for your help. I was aware of the citation, but the reference to Royal Horse is strange. All the family info. and his citation indicate that Private JH Shepperd was in the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch). Regards Roland

You need to ask one of the specialist military forums such as the Rootschat one.

Personally, I can't even decide whether this guy is pre or post WW1, but I've no real feel for this sort of thing. However - there are interesting bits:
- collar badges - I thought these tended to be post-war for ordinary soldiers - on the other hand, with resplendent moustache suggesting seniority, I would have thought he would have medals if post war;
- the bonnet pattern;
- the cap badge;
- the shoulder badge;
- the 3 buttons on the cuff (very interesting).
Those are the things that might id his regiment. The 3 buttons on the cuff were used by the Lovat Scouts according to one book I've just been checking - but that same book has a different bonnet for them and maybe others used them. However, the Lovat Scouts had a somewhat complex (to me) organisational history in WW1, including links to the Scottish Horse and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. The cap badge has a resemblance to that of the QOCH.

I dont know if you are still stuck on this issue but if it helps, I am researching something similar.
My relative was in The Black Watch( Royal Highlanders) in WW1 and his regimental number is only about 100 less than the one quoted here. He finished the war injured, and I finally found his discharge papers. It turns out he was first posted at Dunkeld to The Scottish Horse (1917) but his medal roll quoted Royal Highlanders. This is because several parts of The Scottish Horse were amalgamated into Black Watch Battalions, so I suggest this may have happened in your case too. I have a photo of my relative in the same uniform as this photo and the badge looks identical to The Scottish Horse. The three buttons on the sleeve are telling too. I've went through the remnants of the burnt records at Kew (online), but cant find anything. The regimental records for The Scottish Horse are in the Dunkeld Cathedral Chapter House Museum archive and they are supposed to be extensive...my next port of call. Good luck with yours. Brian
