name changes between Census

Postby wendygreatorex48 » Wed Nov 09, 2011 2:10 pm

We have a family name issue! In the 1901 census George Henry Bulmer, wife Elizabeth and children Jane Louisa are happily named Bulmer, as per marriage cert & birth cert of Jane. By 1911 Census they + more children are all down as Hamilton....I 'm sure it's the same family...anyone any idea HOW we can find out how/why/when they changed surname. Jane married in 1920 under name Hamilton.

Hi Wendy,

I had a look at the 1911 census and agree that it seems to be the same family . I noticed that
Pybus Hamilton was adopted , started to look for him and found that the name crops up at
various times in Durham. I couldn't find his baptism on familysearch but I did find one for
John Richard Hamilton 1905 , baptized as John Richard Hamilton Bulmer son of George
and Elizabeth Bulmer 12 Jul 1905 Southwick so there is a link . I tried looking for Hamilton /
Bulmer marriages and came up with this :

groom's name: Pybus Hamilton
groom's birth date: 1845
groom's age: 26
bride's name: Margaret Bulmer
bride's birth date: 1845
bride's age: 26
marriage date: 30 Oct 1871
marriage place: Chester-Le-Street, Durham, England
groom's father's name: Richard Hamilton
bride's father's name: George Bulmer
groom's marital status: Single
bride's marital status: Single
indexing project (batch) number: M00957-7
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1894225

This by no means explains the sudden change of name but it does indicate a close Hamilton/
Bulmer connection which is worth exploring.

Will post again if I find anything else.

Hello again,

I found this interesting 1871 census record for Great Lumley :

George BULMER 51 head Coxhoe
Mary Ann wife 49 Greatham
MARGARET dau 26 ( b 1845 ) Whittle
( 4 other children)
George H BULMER 3 Grandson Great Lumley

It seems that George H is probably the son of Margaret Bulmer who married Pybus Hamilton
in October 1871.

Thanks Colin.....I had found the John Richard Hamilton Bulmer too....I agree there seems to be some kind of connection. My cousin has asked me to do this for him...I LOVE researching my and other members of the family. There is a Durham link in that his mother & my father (brother & sister) were born there as was his father & grandparents. This is driving him crazy...but I'll tell him we have back up support now! thanks again!
wendy :)

Thanks for extra note...I wondered whether George H was the illigitimate son of Margaret ....haven't found the marriage between her & Pybus Hamilton....in 1871...THANKS!

I would have thought that when Margaret married Pybus Hamilton in 1871, her son George Henry who was 3 was called Hamilton rather than Bulmer. In 1881 he was still at home with Pybus and Margaret and so hence Hamilton. Perhaps some disagreement between Pybus and George caused George to revert to his name at birth in the 1890s. I see that he married as a Bulmer. Perhaps after Margaret's death there was some reconcilliation and he adopted the Hamilton name again.

Do you have George and Elizabeth's marriage certificate? Who does he name as his father if any?
George Henry Bulmer's marriage to Elizabeth Bestford in 1896:
http://nd.durham.gov.uk/gro/mi189100.ns ... iew&query=[indvenue]=CH%2021+and+[year]=1896+and+[indent]=194&cert&order=C0072343121212122011$&idpass=mi18910073880656F59DB14280256F2D00553A2F

This I presume is George's baptism (from findmypast)
Day: 1
Month: Jan
Year: 1868
Forenames: George
Surname: Bulmer
Fathers Forenames:
Occupation:
Mothers Forenames: Margaret
Mothers Surname: Bulmer
Place: Lumley
County: Durham
Country: England

I can't find a birth record for Pybus William age 2 in 1911 either as a Hamilton nor a Bulmer.

george henry bulmer married mary jane shaw in 1896 index nr 10a818. elizabeth bestford married either a ramshaw or turnbull index nr 10a816. easy enough to mistake the index nr.also found a george bulmer aged 8 in 1911 census chester le street. all the best mick am still trying to locate george henry's parents..
