WWI POW PHOTOS TO SHARE

Postby watfordp » Mon Oct 03, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi one and all,

Sorry but I am not sure who would pick this one up. I am trying to find out which site/forum/blog etc would achieve the best results for me to share WW1 POW pictures.

My grandfather was William Watford: Born 12.10.1894 – Guestling, West Sussex.

His army details are
Sapper B Watford 2nd Musketry –Training Battalion 1871631 &
B Watford Fieldstation 252 Party “B” Company Royal Engineers
Private & Sergeant 2nd queens regiment 9702

I also know that during the 1917 ‘Battle of Arras’, France he was captured and became a Prisoner of War. I have recently found some group photographs/postcards which I believe were taken during his capitivity.

All the photographs were taken by ‘Frau Anna Nieworth, Gamsen Kastorp, Kr Gifhorn’.

Picture 1: Bill Watford is 1st right back row.

From another photo the soldier second from right is "S Thomas 14th Battn A.I.F"

Picture 2 Bill Watford is 1st left back row

On reverse of postcard "Sgt B Watford, The Queens, Saltau 3010, Hanover, Deutschland

Picture 3 : Bill Watford is 3rd row back from front ,fourth from 4 right –On the reverse of postcard is written “With Best Wishes for 1918 Sgt 106970 Harry Bra(u?)ce27853Matthews 9863 Leonard C Brown6551 George(William J) Quinnell-Ancestry
William J Quinnell Royal West Kent Regiment GS/6551

Pictures 4,

I do not think Bill Watford is in this one but on reverse of card is writen
"On the reverse of postcard is written “With Best Wishes for 1918 Sgt 106970 Harry Brace 27853Matthews 9863 Leonard C Brown6551 George(William J) Quinnell-Ancestry
William J Quinnell Royal West Kent Regiment GS/6551
I have found W J Quinell & Harry Brace

I hope this can be of interest to many, plus other similar postcards.

Kind Regards

Phil Watford
