Help with dating photos

Postby sambrown76 » Fri Sep 30, 2011 10:00 pm

This lady is possibly my 3x great grandmother Jane Crawford (nee Hardy). Jane was born in 1828 at East Leake, Nottinghamshire and died in 1909 at Barkby Thorpe, Leicestershire.

I would like to know when these photos were likely to have been taken. The one where she is sitting in the garden looks like it may have been taken at the beginning of the 20th century not long before she died.

Is there any significance to her dress and hat/headress in the indoor photo? Why the white veil? Her husband died in 1892, could it be mourning dress? Also on the surround of this photo is F Matthews, Oxford. Jane lived in Notts/Leics all her life so could F Matthews have been a travelling photographer?

Any help with these questions would be appreciated.

Hello

F. Matthews is listed on the website www.victorianphotographers.co.uk, you have to pay to view the details but it could be worth a look.

Did your ancestor have anything to do with nursing? The headwear in the second photo does look a little long but senior nurses did wear a uniform of this style - just a thought, probably wrong!
