Help with dating photo Northants Shoe Trade

Postby PatW » Mon Aug 08, 2011 2:22 pm

Could anyone help with this photo such as date and any other info that may help. All the Northants side of my family were involved in the shoe industry so any info that can help me identify the man in the photo would be appreciated.

Thanks

The photo can be dated between 1896 and 1924. One of the products advertised on the shop window is Wood Milne Rubber Heels and that company was in operation between those dates before being sold. As to who the gentleman is, you could try Northampton Directories for this period and search through the listings for boot and shoe repairers until you find one whose address is no. 59 ..... ( this is clearly shown above the entrance door). This should give you the name of the shop owner. If you are not local to Northampton try contacting their archives /library or the local family history society. Ancestry do have directories on line but without a name it is difficult to search.

Good hunting.

Thanks Rita. I'm sorry to have been so slow in replying but I thought that I would get an automatic email to let me know someone had posted a reply. Obviously not. So that's another lesson learned !
I'm not local to Northampton so I'll need to contact the archive dept/library.

Thanks again

Hello Pat

You are welcome to the information, I found it by doing a simple google search for some of the products shown on the shop window. I hope you get some help from Northampton Archives too. By the way your letter is in the current WDYTYA magazine so you may get further help from people who read the magazine but not the website. Even if you haven't posted a query it's always worth having a look at the forum every few days as some really interesting information is posted even if it has no relevance to you at the time. Good hunting.

You may find it useful to contact the shoe museum in Northampton

From their website:
"The footwear collection is based at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery. We also have an extensive specialist reference library. If you have any enquiries relating to our collection, please contact Rebecca Shawcross rshawcross@northampton.gov.uk or 01604 837281. "

They would almost certainly have records relating to your family

Pat,

There IS a such a facility, which you may not have noticed when posting.
If you look below the text entry box, you'll see some 'options'. One of these says 'Notify me when a reply is posted', just tick box before posting and you'll get an e-mail every time someone replies.

Regards
Mike
